European nations are becoming more and more prevalent these days as popular destinations where Indians prefer to migrate to. Portugal is one such country not a lot of people know about with respect to its foreign policies and migration benefits. After the pandemic, the economy of many nations has struggled because of which the demand for an international workforce has surged. Rudraksh Immigration Group in Mohali is a pioneer overseas consultancy that has been in the industry for over 28 years. They recommend the option of migrating to Portugal in order to study, work or settle.

Portugal comes under the EU (European Union) and requires a Schengen Visa. Hence, most requirements are similar to those other European countries. However, the main aspect to consider is if you are seeking a Short Stay Visa (less than 90 days), a Long Stay Visa (more than 90 days) or a Multiple Entry Visa (where you need to travel to and from Portugal frequently).

Nevertheless, the requirements for all these types of visas are, more or less, the same. Following are the criteria for securing the Schengen Visa for Portugal:

  1. Duly filled visa application form that you will find online.
  2. 2 recent passport-size photos.
  3. Indian Passport not older than 10 years which must be valid for at least 3 months after the departure from Portugal.
  4. Travel and medical insurance cover upto €30,000.
  5. Evidence of legal residency in India (ID Proof).
  6. Cover Letter stating your purpose of visit.
  7. Flight & Travel itinerary and proof of accommodation.
  8. Proof of your civil status like a marriage certificate.
  9. Proof of funds to support your living at €40 per day.

Now, for the students who want to pursue higher education in Portugal, additional certificates are required. This includes their academic qualifications, experience certificates, letter of acceptance from a university in Portugal, etc.

For the people who are already working in India but have secured a job in Portugal, or are getting transferred internally to Portugal while staying in the same company, you need a NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the Indian employer, an Employment contract with a salary and bank statement for last 6 months & Licensing documentation, if necessary. All these documents will be easily provided to you by your existing company without any issues.

The duration of processing the documents is just 15 days under normal circumstances. Even if there are a lot of applications, you could consider around 30-45 days as the minimum time to get your application processed.

If you are applying through the Portugal Embassy directly, the fee is €80 (€40 for minors). But if you are applying through VFS, then an additional €38 is charged. Ideally, you could apply at most, 6 months and at least 15 days prior to your planned visit. Once, you land in Portugal, you are free to travel across the other European countries on the Schengen Visa which is a perk.
