Did you ever stroll over your driveway and go via a suspiciously deep spot? Constantly that little sinking sensation, as though you were saying hmm that was not there before. Just found out you had a depression of asphalt, eh, and you know, you get it at the first stage, that is half the battle that is won.

What Exactly Are We Looking For?

Imagine the following scenario: one morning you are pulling out of your garage and your car is rocking in a position that was a few weeks ago completely smooth. That asphalt of yours up there talking to you. Sinkholes do not always have to be dramatic depressions. They may begin as almost undetectable depressions which may eventually grow bigger.

The point is that these depressions may be cunning. They could be started by small circles on which the surface is no more than a few millimeters below the pave that surrounds it. The water may collect at the end of a rain, where it would not run off before. That is really a giveaway.

The Detective Work

This is where the interest sets in. The earliest depressions are seen immediately after it has rained. Water does not lie, he always circuit round to the lowest level and rests there like a lazy cat sitting in the sun. When you notice the puddles forming where they would not have been before, you have got your problem areas.

However, this is what happens with timing. You should not wait and do your inspection when everything is good. You can save yourself a lot of serious money in the future by taking a stroll in your driveway every few months. Search places where the surface appears to be slightly off level, when there may not be water.

Others go down to the primitive level and employ a straight edge or even a phone level application. Seems a bit extreme, but it in fact works very well in identifying slight alterations in the surface level.

Why This Happens in the First Place

In fact, the knowledge on why depressions occur will make you identify them at an earlier stage. In the majority of cases, it is a matter of what is beneath the asphalt. The underlying material could be subsiding or water could be eroding stable soil. It is sometimes merely the consequence of heavy loads there being taken over and over.

The foundation by having heavy vehicles parked at the same spot day in day out can cause the heavy base layer to be firmly compressed. Even the simplest of activities such as parking your car in the same position every day can cause depression in a subtle way in the long run.

The Fix-It Approach

It is a little tricky to this part, but the good thing is that depressions in early stages are far easier to solve than actual potholes. In case of minor depressions, in some cases a professional may apply to hot-mix asphalt to raise the low part and get the correct grade to drainage.

The most important one is the word professional. Surely you might be tempted to pick cold-patch stuff off of the hardware store, but that is but a short term band-aid solution. Proper asphalt driveways repair involves addressing both the surface depression and any underlying issues that caused it.

When to Call for Help

DIY is alright, however, asphalt work is not one of them. When depressions have started to form particularly when they begin to fill up with water or become significantly deeper than they were at the outset then it is high time to get somebody who is familiar with the job to do it.

The fact is, that appearance of the surface problem is frequently based on the drainage problems or base failing. The qualified contractor will be able to evaluate the need to undertake mere patch job or a more elaborate undertaking.

Early detection of these problems is not only a matter of preventing additional costs of repair in the future. It is about having clean and usable surfaces that will not cause one to be on the ground or harm the vehicles of the visitors. Also, it is good to be ahead of problems rather than always playing catch-up.

Your driveway labours diligently on a daily basis. Minimal attention here and there puts it in a position to continue doing its job years to come.
